Smith, Bell & Thompson traces its origin back to 1928. Originally founded as Smith & Bell Insurance, a traditional independent insurance agency, our office has been located in the heart of downtown Burlington since its inception. Our final move in Burlington came in the summer of 2000 when we moved to a brand new building adjacent to the Lake Champlain waterfront, in the summer of 2000. In 2004 SB&T became part of national insurance intermediary Hilb, Rogal & Hobbs (HRH), and in 2008, with the merger of HRH and Willis Group Holdings, became a division of Willis HRH of North America.   

Since 1928, we have remained dedicated to insuring the people and businesses of Vermont and upstate New York. Unlike most other Vermont insurance agencies, we are now also licensed to write insurance in all 50 states.

A leader in the field of specialty insurance.

In the late 1960's, Smith, Bell & Thompson entered the specialty insurance field by developing a jewelers block insurance program for the Retail Jewelers of America. In the mid-1970's, a crisis began in the medical malpractice field. Smith, Bell & Thompson was asked to design an insurance program for the local Visiting Nurses Association. Over thirty years later, we are the nation's leader in providing professional liability insurance for the Home Health Care industry.

Smith, Bell & Thompson also now designs, markets and administers a wide variety of exclusive national and regional specialty insurance programs through over 6,000 independent insurance agents across the United States. These other programs target Medical Equipment Providers, Social Service Providers, Medical Staffing Firms, Medical Facilities, Metalworking & Plastics manufacturers...and more.

Vermont's foremost captive insurance manager.

In 1982, Smith, Bell & Thompson formed one of the first "captive" insurance management companies in Vermont. SB&T Captive Management Company has assisted many diverse clients in establishing and licensing their own captive insurance companies. With the integration of Hilb, Rogal and Hobbs and Willis Group Holdings in 2008, SB&T Captive Management Company joined Willis Captive Management and has now has added global expertise and capabilities.
